Starting October 2, 2026, we are pleased to present PICNIC , a solo exhibition by British illustrator Tess Smith Roberts.
Tess conceived this exhibition following a year-long stay in Tokyo, drawing inspiration from the everyday experiences and observations that shaped her time in Japan.
Tess’s work brings to life the many things that surround us in our daily lives. From food and creatures to familiar everyday objects, she adds her distinctive “faces” to each subject, giving them a sense of personality and life.
For PICNIC , Tess presents a series of illustrations inspired by the scenes of British dining, alongside works drawn from the Japanese culture and everyday moments she encountered during her year in Tokyo.
To mark the exhibition, we spoke with Tess about the ideas and experiences behind PICNIC .
1 Q. It's been a while since you had an exhibition in Japan. I heard the topic you chose this time is "picnic" — why did you choose this topic? A. i chose Picnic because I love drawing food and fruits, and picnic seemed like the best way to combine the two. I also love drawing gingham and checked table cloths, so it was a good reason to get them into more illustrations. in the end i discovered that picnics are one of the best things for me to illustrate! 2 Q. Tess, it's been a year since you moved to Japan. Over this past year living in Japan, have you noticed any changes in your creative process, your work, or your state of mind? A. i can’t believe it’s been a year! time goes so fast. i think i draw more things inspired by japanese culture now, like konbini foods, and kissaten. i loveeee drawing kissaten actually, especially pudding and melon soda. my dogs are very inspired by my time here too. always so fluffy and round, with great haircuts! i also find myself doing more handrawn stuff with marker pens now. i think hand drawn is really appreciated here. it’s so nice and relaxing. 3 Q. Through this exhibition, what is the message you most want to convey? Also, what do you want the audience to enjoy? A. happiness through food, and sharing food, and sharing our time with friends to eat food : ) friends and food are the best combination. i hope the audience enjoys all the tiny ants i have in a lot of drawings.. i’m tempted to hid some small ant drawings around the gallery too 4 Q. It seems you've developed a variety of goods — which one is your top recommendation? A. stickers!!! i love making them so much and i love to see people use them. 5 Q. In this exhibition, I noticed motifs I hadn't seen before, like insects. Did these come from your life in Japan? A. yes there is so many more insects here in japan. i also hate ants… when we moved into our flat they kept coming inside the house. but to get over that I’ve been drawing a lot of them. now they feel cute to me. but i still dont want them in my house. luckily they are gone now :’) 6 Q. What does "picnic" mean to you, Tess A. picnic means sharing food and having fun with friends!
